A three-phase Type 2 charging cable is suitable for both single-phase and three-phase charging and provides a higher charging power output, resulting in faster charging times.

Charge Times Between 7kW, 11kW, and 22kW Chargers

The main difference between a 7kW, 11kW, and 22kW charger for an electric vehicle is the charging rate.

A 7kW charger will charge the battery at 7 kilowatts per hour, while an 11kW charger will charge the battery at 11 kilowatts per hour, and a 22kW charger will charge the battery at 22 kilowatts per hour. 

However, it's important to note that the maximum charging rate depends on the vehicle's onboard charger. The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, for example, have a maximum AC charging speed of 11kW, so they won't charge any faster using a 22kW charger.

 

Is It Better to Purchase a 22kW Over an 11kW Charging Cable?

When it comes to charging your electric vehicle, choosing the right charger is crucial. Here are three reasons why you might want to consider a 22kW charger over an 11kW charger:

Cost

While a 22kW charger may have a higher price tag, it can provide more value in the long run. Investing in a 22kW charger provides the flexibility to charge other Tesla Models, such as the Model S and X, which have a maximum AC charging speed of 16.5kW.

Weight

Although a 22kW charger may be slightly heavier due to its larger size and higher power output, the weight difference is usually minimal. The benefits of faster charging may outweigh the minor increase in weight.

Charging speed

A 22kW charger with 32A will charge 22kW over three phases, while an 11kW charger with 16-20A will charge slower over a single phase (compared to a 7kW, 32A charging cable). While this difference may not be significant enough to concern most users, it's worth considering if you have specific charging needs.
